Young athletes need coaching, not a shrunken adult program
Kids and teenagers are not small adults. Their training should build coordination, confidence, and a foundation of clean movement before it ever chases big numbers. Youth strength and conditioning here is about teaching young athletes to move well, get stronger safely, and actually enjoy the work, so they keep doing it for years.
I’m Lawrence Gordon, Coach JR. I co-own U FIT Fitness and Wellness, and I train and compete as an athlete myself. Kids respond to a coach who does the work, and they respond even better to a coach who makes standards feel like a game worth winning.
What we build
- Movement first. Squatting, hinging, jumping, landing, and sprinting taught as skills. Good positions before any real load.
- Strength, scaled to the age. Bodyweight, bands, and light external load introduced gradually, with technique standards that never bend.
- Athletic conditioning. Speed, agility, and coordination developed through play and structured drills, matched to the kid’s sport and season.
- Confidence and habits. Showing up, trying hard, and getting a little better each week. The wins that carry into every part of a young person’s life.
Is strength training safe for kids?
Yes, when it is supervised and taught properly. The major pediatric and sports-medicine organizations agree that supervised, technique-first strength training is safe for young people and is one of the best tools we have for reducing sports injuries. The idea that lifting stunts growth is a myth. What actually hurts kids is bad loading with no coaching, which is exactly what a real coach prevents.
Anything outside my lane, like a nagging injury or a medical question, gets referred straight to the right professional. I will always tell you when something belongs with your doctor.
For parents
You will know what your athlete is doing and why. Sessions happen in person in the Alton and Godfrey area, one on one or in small groups, and I keep parents in the loop on progress and standards. The goal is not to specialize a ten year old. It is to build a strong, confident, durable young athlete who has real options later.
Older athletes chasing a roster spot can step into dedicated athlete performance training when they are ready. For the youngest, we start with fundamentals and fun. Apply here and tell me about your kid.
