Runway beats everything
The single biggest predictor of a good first show is time. Not genetics, not the perfect program: weeks of runway. A prep with generous runway diets slowly, keeps muscle, practices posing properly, and arrives calm. A rushed prep crash-diets, loses muscle with the fat, and arrives depleted and flat.
So the first question is never “which show,” it is “how far out am I, honestly?” Photos and a candid assessment answer that. If the answer says next spring instead of this fall, that is not a delay. That is the plan working before it started.
The questions that pick the show
Which division fits your build today? Men’s Physique, Classic, and Bodybuilding reward different structures and carry different posing demands. Pick the division your current frame can be competitive in, not the one your favorite influencer competes in.
How far will you travel? A first show within driving distance removes flights, unfamiliar hotels, and food logistics from the most stressful week of your life. Local first, national later.
Novice or open? Many shows offer novice classes where every competitor is also standing on stage for the first time. There is no medal for skipping that experience on principle.
Is it a national qualifier? If long-term goals matter to you, some shows qualify winners for national events. The 2026 NPC Missouri State Championships where I won the overall was one. For a first show this is a bonus, not a requirement.
What is the show’s reputation? Well-run shows with experienced promoters make first experiences dramatically better. Ask competitors in your area, or ask a coach who has stood on those stages.
Pick backwards from show day
Once a candidate show exists, the math runs in reverse: weeks of prep needed, plus buffer for the weeks life will steal. If the math fits, commit and register early. A registered show changes behavior like nothing else on earth.
Helping first-timers pick right is genuinely part of the coaching. Bring me your photos and your calendar, and we will choose like professionals.
